Well I already have IIS, and I don't really want SQL Server or Visual Web Developer, this guide is aimed at those who just want the core PHP extension.

Seems neat though! :-)

I agree with most of it, you written it very nicely. I was looking for eAthena community months ago but it just dissapear (since then I haven't tried again) and I couldn't find for more stuff related with eAthena Ragnarok Online server. With Otserv everything is different, we can see many many forums for all languages. Otfans, Otland in English are the bigger ones. eOtfans (managed by me) and Otfusion as the bigger ones after the English ones talking on Spanish.

I liked the article, goodluck in new ones.

Almost nobody involved with the server really wants to help newbies. There are simply too many servers and too little quality, so the equation reads "Helping noobs == more noobs", further lowering quality. Which may be true.

What we need (and not all otserv developers agree) is to make easier tools for server management. And I don't mean just map editors and item editors. I mean overall management suite.

We need a one-click installation of a neat web based AAC. We need good documentation on formats and protocols used. We need good quest development suites, we need GUIs for user management independent of the web.

Overall, we need to provide better user interface for the user than just a command line based window. We need UPnP for autoconfiguring servers. We need to detect user's external IP using an external service. That will improve quality of average server since it will be easier for average user to customize it, and it will decrease number of support requests.

On the other hand, cancer is cured by radiation, as well as caused by it. So perhaps proposed things will indeed increase number of people interested, but not improve average quality. And, perhaps making administration more difficult has decreased the number of people interested in administrating a server, thus reducing overall noobiness and number of support requests.

I don't have access to numbers, but I'm sure that since revdbsys came around, less people are hosting a server or choosing to host a new server.
