There’s been ages since we last saw or heard any news on Remere’s online mapeditor, but I suspect it might be closer to (beta?) release than most people might think. In the latest release of RME (1.1.10) there was some cryptic phrasing used when explaining why the editor is no longer released under GPL:
and because I’d prefer some of the futures planned for 1.2.0 to be closed-source (for security reasons).
Now, what security reasons might this be? A standard map editor doesn’t do much other than change OTBM files, which is an open-source format. Sure, there could simply be a neat new feature that allows you toread your email in the editor and that it’s only a beta, thus making sure that nobody abuses potential bugs, but I don’t find that likely.
What I do find likely is a scenario where there’s a RME Live Beta around and it might have bugs which could potentially do things on the mapserver that it ain’t supposed to.
Either way, I got my hopes up today. And I know for sure what I want for Christmas now.
For a lot of people the internet is an endless source of fun, for others it’s one humongous opportunity to be who you want to be. I’m going to talk a bit about the latter.
A lot of kids show up on the internet, big news. Some of them photoshop their avatars and upgrade their virtual identities to be something they think the general population will envy and respect. Sure, this may very well prove true for a lot of the online population. But every polished persona will at some point look like just that, polished. Upgrading your 15-year old IRL identity to an 18-year old datacenter owner without neither the english skills nor the internet infrastructure knowledge to back it up will eventually get you into trouble.
Of course, trouble on the internet isn’t the same as trouble IRL, thank god for that. But still, when you’re getting your threads about non-validating company websites with no grammar whatsoever flamed to a constant 1st place on the New Posts search you might want to consider dropping the charade.
Fine, you go ahead and keep it up if you want, but consistently claiming that you are 18 might prove difficult when your WHOIS tells us otherwise.
What troubles me the most is the amount of legal education that the kids of today seem to be getting. I get threatened for breaking PUL (Swedish Privacy Protection Law) by posting his real age when this guy is ripping copyrighted websites (his / theirs) and send the admin threatening messages (sorry about the lousy translation, even in his native language he makes no sense) about closing down the forum for not complying with PUL (which strictly prohibits handing out sensitive personal information, so that doesn’t even make any sense!).
I love the playground.
Picnik.com really lives up to their motto! It’s childishly simple and it can do quite a surprising lot! Oh, and of course it’s all AJAX.
Sometimes I wonder if it wouldn’t be better to have no moderators on certain forums.. Here I am, having a constructive yet intensive discussion and all of a sudden there’s 42 posts less in the thread!
Maybe allowing users to purchase moderator-free threads would be mutually beneficial?
I always suspected this day would come. I mean, there’s only so many customers that will purchase your free-upgrades-for-a-lifetime product before it stops being profitable.
For the uninitiated reader; Tibiabot.com has for the past few years been selling bots for Tibia for a one-time fee of $10, but recently they decided to simply terminate all communication with the world, leaving a lot of customers pissed.
IIS 7 looks nothing like IIS 6. But fear not, just because it’s sexier than ever it doesn’t mean that you cant set up PHP in less than a minute!
Ladies and gentlemen, start your stopwatches (and webengines?)!
- Go to PHP.net and download the latest ZIP package for Windows.

- Extract into a folder that doesn’t make the path have spaces in it.
Wrong:
C:\Program Files\PHP
Correct:
C:\ProgramFiles\PHP
Obviously doesn’t need to be in ProgramFiles, it’s just an example.
- Launch IIS
- Select your server and click Handler Mappings

- Add Script Map

- Set Request Path to *.php and Executable to be php5isapi.dll in your PHP folder

- Press OK and allow it permissions to do its thing (press Yes in the inevitable permissions popup).

- Done!
Now, normally you would want to add index.php to your Default Documents list, but I assume you know how/will Google it. Enjoy your new PHP server! :-)
I see GrizZm0 finally decided to be true to his word when he said that a webserver shouldn’t use any processing power.
CNN reports that Rupert Murdoch sees no future for free news on the internet, obviously he has no clue how the internet works. I mean, we all know how people love to share anything that can fit in a .rar file and on top of that there’s no way in hell they can outlaw free speech, so there’s no way for them to stop the spreading of news.
Okay, fine. We all know they will do just that.
20 minutes I don’t really regret spending on a presentation.
You should too! http://storyofstuff.com/
One of the downsides of working with people that display symptoms of Asperger Syndrome is that every once in a while you end up in an argument, and you know it’s meaningless to correct your colleague because facts don’t matter as long as he can keep telling himself he knows everything.
Now, in my case my colleague is usually a very bright person who knows what he’s talking about, and this makes things even worse when I then after above mentioned argument have to Google it and spend 30 minutes making sure I was right.
Bah, now I spent another 30 minutes finding this picture just because I’m so angry.
